Biologically, both hemp and weed are classified as forms of the cannabis plant; however, they both contain completely different compounds and are intended for different uses. Beyond that, there are several key differences between hemp and weed. In fact, cannabis (marijuana) contains up to 28% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive compound that creates a high. On the other hand, hemp only contains up to 0.3% of THC, which means that it will not result in a high and does not contain enough THC for one to experience a psychoactive effect.
What is Hemp?
Hemp has been around for thousands of years, cultivated by humans for many different purposes. Studies have shown that it may be one of the oldest living plants cultivated by humans for a variety of purposes, including but not limited to, making materials for clothing, textiles, shoes, ropes, paper, food, medicine, and so much more.
One of the most fascinating things about hemp is that it is still used today. Today, hemp is used for more than what it was originally used for. Legally, hemp must not contain any more than 0.3% THC. This means that when using or consuming hemp products, it will not cause a high whatsoever due to the fact that it contains such little THC, which is the psychoactive compound found in marijuana.
What is Hemp Used For?
Hemp is one of the most multifaceted plants in the world, given that it can be used for a wide range of different purposes, including industrial purposes, food, medicinal purposes, pet products, and more.
Materials and textiles: For centuries, hemp has been known for its rich, durable fibers that have been extremely useful in creating clothing, shoes, ropes, paper, and more. Hemp grows similarly to a weed, meaning it grows in abundance with very little water or care. Unlike cotton, hemp requires very little irrigation and can be grown in a variety of environments and different soils. In addition, hemp does not require any pesticides in order to grow. Because it grows so quickly and easily, this made it a common use for creating materials and textiles during ancient times. Beyond that, hemp is highly sustainable and eco-friendly, making it an even more fascinating plant that poses great benefits to the environment and to people who use it.
Building and construction: Hempcrete, otherwise known as limecrete, is a biocomposite material that can be used as an eco-friendly alternative for a wide range of building materials. Some of the benefits that hempcrete poses include a high level of insulation and it absorbs carbon. It can be used for insulation, hempcrete bricks, ceiling panels, and more.
Food: Hemp seeds, also known as hemp hearts, can be consumed in a variety of ways. According to studies, hemp seeds are a superfood that is rich in a number of nutrients, including protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and more. They contain the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, making them a healthy supplement to incorporate into your diet (according to studies). Hemp seeds can be added to smoothies, yogurt, salad toppings, protein bars, muffins, and so much more.
Hemp seed oil is another common way that people consume hemp. Hemp seed oil can be enjoyed by itself, or added to salad dressings, smoothies, and more.
Hemp milk is also a common way to consume hemp. It is a plant-based milk that has an earthy, nutty flavor. Hemp milk can even be made at home.
Generally, hemp seeds, hemp seed oil, and hemp milk can be found at certain grocery stores and most health food stores. Hemp is legal in the U.S. because it only contains up to 0.3% THC.
Essential oils: Hemp seed oil can also be incorporated into essential oils, which can be breathed in or rubbed onto the body for a variety of different purposes. Hemp seed oil can also be used topically by itself as well. However, it is recommended that you do a test patch before trying it on the rest of your body to ensure that you are not allergic or that it doesn’t cause irritation to the skin.
Keep in mind that these are just a few examples in which hemp can be used. However, just like with any other supplement, you should always discuss with your doctor before using any hemp products.
Key Differences in the Characteristics of Hemp and Marijuana Plants
Hemp and marijuana are cultivated for entirely different purposes. This means that the characteristics of each plant are completely different and require specific harvesting techniques.
Generally, hemp plants are characterized by:
- Thinner leaves that mostly form at the top of the plant
- Contain little leaves or branching below the very top of the plant in order to utilize the long stalks that are rich in hemp fiber
- Can reach up to 20 feet
- Looks and grows much like a weed, as it requires little irrigation, no pesticides, and can grow in a variety of different environments and soils
- Grows closely together
- Requires very little care
On the other hand, marijuana is typically characterized by:
- Leaves that are firmly sprouted, wide, and may feature small buds that are covered in tiny crystals or fibers
- Generally look like fat, short bushes from afar
- More branches to promote flower and THC production
- Requires warm, humid, and controlled environment in order to grow
- Grows with spaced between other plants
Although hemp and marijuana come from the same cannabis Sativa L. family, they contain completely different compositions and are cultivated for different purposes.
