For decades, the hemp plant was made illegal and often confused with its cousin, marijuana. While hemp and marijuana both come from the Cannabaceae family, they contain completely different compounds and are intended for different uses. Hemp is the non-intoxicating form of cannabis, which also has a long-standing history, as it has been cultivated for centuries for industrial purposes. Some of the ways hemp was cultivated were mostly for textiles and materials, such as clothing, paper, ropes, as well as food, and so much more. On the other hand, cannabis has also been used by humans for a long time; however, it is cultivated for different reasons and results in a “high.”
Legally, hemp may only contain 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which means that when used or consumed, individuals will not experience a high or any type of euphoric-like feeling. On the other hand, cannabis can contain up to 28% of THC, which will result in a high. Hemp and cannabis are cultivated for completely different uses and it is important to understand the difference between them.
Hemp became legal in the U.S. after the 2018 Farm Bill was passed. The Farm Bill allowed hemp to be formally distinguished from marijuana. Today, hemp products can be found in specific grocery stores, as well as health food stores.
Now that hemp has been made legal throughout the U.S., it has become increasingly popular, as well as CBD bud that you are able to smoke, otherwise known as hemp bud. Hemp bud is also referred to as hemp flower or CBD flower.
The Differentiation of Cannabis-Derived CBD and Hemp
If you plan to experience the psychoactive effects, simply known as a “high,” you won’t experience that from hemp flower. This is due to the fact that hemp plants are cultivated for commercial purposes and contain only 0.3% of THC, which is not enough for you to experience any sort of high. This is because hemp contains such a little amount of THC, which means it is not intoxicating.
Studies have shown that CBD may provide a number of benefits, including for medicinal purposes. If you wish to experience the medicinal benefits of CBD, then it is important to know that hemp buds are generally not rich in CBD and are not an effective way to reach the cannabinoid properties.
However, there are CBD products that do contain high contents of THC cannabis, which means that it is far more conceivable to have a higher level of terpenes and CBD. Terpenes are the aromatic compositions found in cannabis, which have a distinct smell and flavor. Studies have shown that CBD that is derived from cannabis provides a significant medicinal benefit, as opposed to CBD that is derived from hemp. This is because CBD derived from hemp contains such little amount of THC, which won’t result in a high.
Does Hemp Have Buds?
Yes, hemp does have buds, which grow at the top of the hemp stalk in thick clusters and are also known as colas. The clusters of hemp buds or colas are tucked away by trichomes. The trichomes allow the plant to create cannabinoids and terpenes, which are used for a variety of therapeutic purposes and benefits.
Hemp buds and cannabis buds look very similar and even smell and taste the same; however, there is one key difference between the buds: one will get you high and the other won’t. In other words, the hemp buds will not result in a high or psychoactive effect, while the cannabis buds can.
Where Can I Purchase Hemp Products?
As mentioned previously, industrial hemp is legal in the U.S. due to the fact that it cannot contain any more than 0.3% of THC. Products containing more than 0.3% of THC are considered to be marijuana, which is illegal federally.
Hemp products are sold in a variety of stores, including grocery stores, health food stores, and more. You can find hemp products in many different forms, including oils and tinctures, foods, and pet products, and hemp is even used in building materials known as hempcrete. Here are some examples of hemp products that you can find today:
- Hemp seed oil, which can be consumed alone, in foods and drinks, or used topically.
- Hemp seeds, which can be added to foods, such as yogurt, salads, or blended into smoothies.
- Hemp milk, which is a plant-based milk, which resembles regular milk in look, texture, and taste. Hemp milk has an earthy-nutty flavor, which is a great alternative to regular milk and other milk alternatives.
Note: If you plan to consume or use hemp products, it is best to speak with your doctor beforehand.
- Hemp pet products come in different forms, such as oils or in treats. Studies have shown that hemp pet products may have certain benefits, such as calming effects for anxiety, improves skin issues, or can be used as a natural pain relief. However, it is important that you speak to your veterinarian before giving your pet any hemp pet products.
- Hempcrete, also known as limecrete, is a biocomposite material that is used as an alternative to traditional building materials. Hempcrete promotes insulation, resists moisture, is non-toxic, and is fairly lightweight.
Hemp is highly sustainable and essentially every part of the hemp plant serves a purpose. Keep in mind that these are just a few examples of how hemp is used today. Traditionally, hemp has been used for creating materials, textiles, and much more.
